BURLINGTON, ON

Burlington Hydro added $25,000 to the Joseph Brant Hospital’s Our New Era Campaign that will go towards ongoing redevelopment and expansion priorities at the hospital.

Most of the patient rooms look south to the lake or north to the escarpment.

The donation is being used as part of continuing renovations to the existing hospital and the construction of the new Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower which opened officially in August.

Gerry Smallegange, Burlington Hydro President and CEO said “We’re very pleased to give back to our community in this meaningful way, and support cutting edge medical care in the City of Burlington for many years to come.

“Expanding medical, surgical and outpatient services are an important part of the ongoing redevelopment of Joseph Brant Hospital.”

When completed, the hospital will take on the look and feel of a campus with its entrance re-oriented to LAkeshore Road. The first phase is the construction of the new McMaster Family Medicine facility that will bring 10 new family practitioners to the city. Three levels of parking will be built above the medical offices.

Agree with all the comments here.

BH has always been a head scratcher to me with little visibility and transparency into their operating practices. Who actually owns them? The taxpayers? If so, why are the salaries of BH employees not disclosed as part of the public sector salary disclosure process (aka Sunshine list)?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Appauled!

How ridiculous. Was Burlington Hydro given the go ahead from Burlington tax payers to authorize this expendinture?
    We need a new government
And the general public need to pay way more attention as to where our tax dollars are allocated. As taxpayers we are getting inundated with additional costs by elected officials who have no right or authority to do so. So appalling. Hopefully you all get elected out of office get the boot where you belong.
Disgusting! Who do you think you are?

More to the point Burlington taxpayers in fact “Own BH.”

$25,000 to the hospital is chump change compared to the $10 Million they gave to build the Performing Arts Center.

Your kidding, 10mil I didn’t know that. Im sitting reading this article and the comments wearing a set of donkeys ears.

No need to wrestle with it, it’s a Dead Wrong misappropriation by the Utility of funds paid for by tax payers. Where do they get get the authority to redistribute our funds? It would be a different story if the donation was made by BH employees.

Words couldn’t be said any better William. We all have been mandated hydro increases, and for them “so graciously” giving “donations” with all the kudos along with a tax write off as a bonus, is a real insult to us who pay to keep them in business. This is a “too frequent” occurrence by many of our Utility Corporations, along with our Government, that leaves all of us “struggling” to balance our books. Hydro “cares” for recognition, but “doesn’t care” about their clientele that pays their wages generously.

I’m wrestling with this announcement. On the one hand, individual and corporate altruism is a good thing – even if the motivations of the giver are often mixed.

In this instance, since BH is a monopoly service paid for by Burlington taxpayers and consumers, does Hydro really have the authority to sprinkle around what we’ve given them? Certainly, it’s not Hydro who is giving “back to our community”; really we are.

BH is looking for publicity for their do-goodism; in their press release saying “Burlington Hydro will mark the occasion with an official photo op when the Ambulatory Care exam room is opened and designated in 2018.”
