BURLINGTON, ON April 11, 2012  It’s going to be the event of the year for a handful of Burlington business organizations, when the Burlington Chamber of Commerce hands out awards in six categories Thursday evening at the Burlington Convention Centre on Burloak Drive.

After months of meetings and interviews, the Chamber put out its list of finalists for its 2011 Business Excellence Awards.  There are 15 local organizations as potential winners of awards in a variety of categories. Award nominations are based on overall business excellence and The 2011 Business Excellence Award Finalists are:

Manufacturer;  Capo Industries Ltd., Heron Instruments Inc.,  Kontek Ecology Systems Inc.

Retail / Wholesale:  Brant Florist, Snuggle Bugz,

Services: Deloitte, Global Mobility Products,  O.C. Tanner Recognition Company Limited

Small Business: Onward Computer Systems,  Poolscape Inc., Sold Right Away

Young Entrepreneur:  Ryan Barichello of LinxSmart,  Trevor Bouchard of QuickContractors.com Inc.

Employer of the Year:  AXYZ International, Pink Elephant.

Anyone can be nominated for an award, but that is just the beginning of what turns out to be a rather rigorous process. The criteria used to determine the finalists include excellence in business leadership, community contributions, entrepreneurship, environment, employee welfare, innovation, and market growth.

The process pits multinationals like Deloitte against smaller single service organizations like O.C. Tanner Recognition who have grown their business from a manufacturing company into a firm that now provides employee recognition advice and programs.

Winners of Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards for 2010 were: L to R: Crystal Leochko, Kathy Mills, Liz Zlabis, Gerry Kavanaugh, Allison Nielsen, John Hunter.

The Chamber has a task force made up of 20 volunteers who visit each of the finalists and then meet as a committee to select the winner in each category.  The Chamber has categories that did not have an entry worthy of an award –so no prize.

For the 2011 awards there were no entries for New Service or New product that met the criteria.

There were more than 50 companies put forward but only six will take an award home.

The Awards have been given out by the Chamber since 1986.  The Chamber has been active in Burlington since 1947.
