Mike Allen, the Gazette cartoonist took a hard look at the debate taking place between the ward 2 candidates this evening and tried to discern just what the issues are.
Is it traffic congestion, the possible loss of a divine cupcake shop; is it all about the kind of development that is taking place?
Many wonder – just who wants the development anyway. Mike has figured that out.
Who wants the “development”? That’s easy – follow the money; i.e., “who will benefit?”.
The problem with the real estate industry’s reliance on the principle of “highest and best use” for property is that it overemphasizes quantitative (financial) over qualitative aspects. That reliance keeps decision making simple, but highest and best use is actually very subjective and complex.
It’s also worth considering what the lifespan of these monstrosities might be and what will happen when they have to be demolished eventually.
